Adams is best known as the author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, which originated in 1978 as a BBC radio comedy before developing into a trilogy of five books that sold more than 15 million copies in his lifetime and generated a television series, several Douglas Noel Adams (11 March 1952-11 May 2001) wrote the Doctor Who television stories The Pirate Planet and Shada. He co-wrote City of Death with producer Graham Williams under the pseudonym David Agnew. He was also script editor for Season 17.

While at the BBC James produced an adaptation of Shada, an unfinished Douglas Adams Doctor Who story, and Dirk is his award-winning stage adaptation of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. He won Best Audiobook 2010 for Dead Air and his books Dead of Winter and First Born were both nominated for the 2012 British Fantasy Society Awards.

Writer David Fisher had contributed two scripts to Doctor Who ' s sixteenth season – The Stones of Blood and The Androids of Tara – and was asked by producer Graham Williams for further story ideas. Douglas Adams was once a scriptwriter for Doctor Who. Life, the Universe and Everything and the Krikkiters were based on a rejected script idea for Doctor Who. Adams also based much of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency on his then-unmade (though much later completed) Doctor Who serial Shada. Doctor Who And The Krikkitmen is a novel based on a recently discovered treatment and extensive notes found in the Douglas Adams archive in Cambridge. The novelisation comes from Doctor Who author, James Goss (City of Death, The Pirate Planet). Shada was the intended final story of Season 17 of Doctor Who. It was to be the final story written by Douglas Adams for the series, the final six-part story until TV: Dreamland in 2009, and the last story to feature Graham Williams as producer, as John Nathan-Turner would take over after this until the end of the series run in 1989.
